Letter to Senator Gaines Protesting NID's Unwillingness to Help Salmon Migration in Auburn Ravine

Senator Gaines,

Recently there have been articles in both the Bee and

the Lincoln Messenger regarding the mess at Hemphill Dam.
...
Briefly, the Nevada Irrigation District operates a dam to provide

water to the Lincoln area. However, this dam is also an impediment

to returning salmon that would otherwise be able to use the Auburn

Ravine to spawn.

Yes, NID has an obligation to provide a quality commodity to

their rate paying customers, but as they point out so well in their

Mission Statement....."to strive to be good stewards of the watersheds

and conserve the available resources".

Well sadly to date Senator, NID has done little other than to provide lipservice

to mitigate the obstruction that Hemphill Dam presents to returning salmon

to continue upstream. Sure, when you talk to management at NID you

will get a lot of corporate blah-blah but they have done little other than to stall

this project which should have been completed years ago.

I would like to see the state become involved in this issue to do what is

right for this and future generations of Placer County citizens.

I would appreciate a response regarding this.

Sincerely Yours,

Bruce Decker
